Kochi has many dominant roles in the history of Kerala football. Football club Kochin was an Indian association football club based on Kochi, Kerala. It was an only football club from Kerala to play National Football league in 1990’s. The only other time a club in Kerala who won Durand cup was back in 1997 when fc Kochin beats Mohun Began with Vijayan scoring in the final.

Jawaharlal Nehru International stadium, the biggest stadium in Kerala is in Kochi, which is locally known as Kaloor stadium which has a capacity of 80,000.The stadium has played host to a number of international Cricket and Football matches. Stadium acts a home ground of Kerala cricket team, Kerala blasters fc . stadium holds fifth loudest crowd in the world . Its shows peoples passion towards football in Kochi.

Significance

  • The first Indian Premier League match at the stadium was between Kochi Tuskers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, held on 9th April 2011
  • First ODI match between Indian and Australia, held in 1st April 1998
  • Nehru Cup International Football Tournament in 1997 was the first tournament conducted.
  • The Indian Super League (ISL) Final of 2016 between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters was held at the stadium during which the crowd noise reached to 128dB.
